Earlier in the week Craig got this photo of a bald eagle flying overhead. The first time I saw one was this fall, by the river in Woodstock, and I just about lost my mind. I had never seen one in person. It was majestic and massive. We are used to seeing beautiful hawks quite often in Rhode Island, but seeing a bald eagle felt special. Eagles have different spiritual significance across cultures and religions. But perhaps what makes seeing a bald eagle particularly uplifting is the fact that 40 years ago they were on the verge of extinction. There were just 417 known nesting pairs in 1963. Through a massive conservation effort, including banning the chemical DDT, bald eagles made a dramatic comeback to a current population of over 300,000 according to researchers. The successful protection and conservation efforts of the bald eagle can be a symbol of hope. We can protect our environment and precious wildlife, if we decide it’s worth saving.
