Over the years I’ve developed somewhat of a science to maintaining my sweaters and making sure they last more than one season (or one wash). There’s been a few I’ve lost along the way which as you probably know can be quite devastating, so after learning my lesson the hard way a few times, I’ve developed a pretty good system. Here are my best tips for keeping your sweaters lookin fresh. Any sweaters pictured here that are still available I’ve rounded up at the bottom of the post.
How To Care For Sweaters
Washing Sweaters
How you wash your sweaters depends mainly on the fabric. If it’s cashmere, I highly recommend dry cleaning. Dry cleaning sweaters all the time can get pricey but there’s a few ways to minimize the expense. First, wear a shirt under your sweater. I never wear any of my sweaters without a light tee underneath. I also like these for underneath turtleneck sweaters.
If you prefer to hand wash or machine wash your sweaters make sure you use cold water and the delicate cycle. I recommend this special detergent for delicates and knitwear. I also only wash 2-3 sweaters max at a time (all the same or similar color). It helps to use To dry, I lay flat or use a drying rack.
There are sweaters you can machine wash. Anything cotton is fine to use the washing machine, but you should almost always air dry or tumble dry on low or no heat.
How to Prevent and Get Rid of Pilling
To prevent pilling, make sure to either dry clean or wash your sweaters using mesh laundry bags. Sweaters rubbing up against each other in the washing machine can create pilling. There are several tools that are great for getting rid of pills. This fabric shaver is affordable and great for getting rid of pilling. Cashmere combs are made specifically for handling the delicate fabric and getting rid of pills. Use short strokes at a 90 degree angle.
Storing Sweaters
Folded is the best way to store sweaters because it prevents any stretching. If you do prefer to hang sweaters, make sure to fold them first and lay over the hanger so they don’t stretch out or lose their shape.
When storing sweaters it can help to use either cedar or moth balls to prevent damage. Sweaters should also be stored somewhere cool and dry as moisture and humidity can allow mildew.
