5 Tips to Help You Stay Active When Traveling

Raise your hand if working out while traveling is your least favorite thing. Yeah I hear you, the struggle is so real. But when I do find the time to get my sweat on while I’m traveling, for work or for play, I feel better, have more energy and I’m less likely to get sick or run down. The key is to make it easy. Traveling is already stressful and exhausting, so keep it simple and you’ll be ten times more likely to get that heart rate up. Here are 5 simple tips to keep it moving on your next trip.

1. Plan ahead/pack accordingly – This one is the most obvious but also the most important. Check the weather of your destination and see what’s around you. Since we are in London staying in an apartment and not a hotel (with a gym) I looked up good locations nearby to exercise outside. It’s a great way to get some fresh air, get your blood flowing and do a little sight-seeing while you’re at it. London is little chilly (and wet) so I got this lululemon fleece pullover and leggings before I left. Confession, I’ve never had lululemon gear before. I know, I think I’m the only one left on planet Earth. But I am a total convert. The fit and quality is amazing.

2. Keep moving – It’s not just about doing something when you arrive at your destination. You can stay active your entire trip (that includes flights and drives). Flying does a number on me, it’s uncomfortable particularly for long durations. I get up every 30-60 minutes and do some stretching in the aisle (be mindful of your neighbors). There’s usually some space near the back of the plane or the middle to stretch out. 3. Create a routine –  I have a “travel routine” that I do when I’m away. It’s quick and simple but it works for me. I do 10 minutes of running, 10 minutes of brisk walking, 10 minutes of stretching and 30 reps of push-ups and tricep dips. It gets my heart rate up and gives me more energy throughout the day.

4. Enjoy the sights – I found a few different spots that were in areas I thought would be scenic. It’s a win-win when you can get a little workout in and also see some beautiful sights along the way. It also makes your workout go by much faster and more enjoyable.

5. Listen to your body – The first few days I was so jet lagged. I was exhausted so I let myself sleep an extra hour. It’s important to get your blood flowing and get some exercise but it’s also important to rest when your body needs it.
