How to Spend the Holidays in Manchester, VT

As the holiday season approaches we always love to go somewhere festive as a family. An easy drive from Woodstock, we chose the charming town of Manchester, Vermont this year to celebrate my birthday and enjoy a fun getaway. The cozy mountain town transforms into a winter wonderland during the holidays and we were greeted with fresh snow upon arrival making it feel extra special. Manchester has the perfect mix of outdoor adventure with two mountains nearby, holiday cheer, and local charm. Here’s how to make the most of a holiday getaway in Manchester, with where to stay, what to do, where to eat, and family-friendly seasonal events that are fun for all.

Where to Stay

Kimpton Taconic Hotel

The Kimpton Taconic Hotel is a really fun option during the holiday season. It’s the perfect blend of New England charm and modern comfort. With cozy sitting rooms, roaring fires, an incredible on site restaurant, and an all around cozy, festive atmosphere.

The Kimpton Taconic is pet friendly and while we didn’t bring our dogs on this trip, we loved the “stick library” for four-legged guests in the lobby. We really enjoyed hanging out by the fireplace in the lobby and playing games in the library. The on-site restaurant, The Copper Grouse, is a must while you’re in town (I couldn’t wait to go back having been a few years ago). The location was super convenient to everything we wanted to explore, and for those of you who drive EVs they have a car charger on site (which we took advantage of during our stay). Our room was perfect for our family of three with a king bed and pull-out couch for our daughter. We loved having an in-room fireplace as well!

Where to Eat

A cozy breakfast by the fire at the copper grouse

The Copper Grouse

Located inside the Taconic, The Copper Grouse is a must visit when in Manchester. Our first night we had an incredible dinner (even my picky 5-year-old loved it). The menu features a variety of locally sourced ingredients and the restaurant went through a recent refresh along with a new head chef. The cocktail menu is fun and unique and they were very accommodating in making my selection non-alcoholic, which was SO delicious (the South by Down East cocktail, trust me!).

We also enjoyed a true Vermont style breakfast in the morning complete with buttermilk pancakes, eggs, bacon, and lots of maple syrup. Everyone was happy and we sat by the fire which was so cozy.

Lost Marble Brewing Company

Lost Marble Brewing Company is very newly opened and Manchester’s first brewery. The perfect spot for craft beer lovers with pizza, pretzels, and good pub-style food.

LOLA Mediterranean Woodfire

Another new addition to Manchester, LOLA is a mediterranean restaurant with great food, cocktails and pizza. Definitely recommend making a reservation if possible.

What to Do

Visit the Sparkle Barn

Visiting The Sparkle Barn feels like stepping into a whimsical, fairytale. Housed in an 1800s dairy barn, the space blends that magical Vermont charm with exposed beams and vintage barn architecture with the bright and joyful decor and merchandising of the owners. It’s the perfect place to stop for holiday gifts or just get a dose of happiness, especially upstairs in the fairy room with an incredible installation of flowers, fairy houses, sculptures and more. The Sparkle Barn is in Wallingford which is on the way to Manchester if you’re coming from Woodstock.

Hit the slopes at Bromley or Stratton

If you’re a skier or snowboarder, a winter trip to Manchester isn’t complete without carving turns at Bromley or Stratton. Bromley is a super family-friendly vibe with spectacular mountain views, while Stratton is bigger with longer runs and a lively atmosphere. Both mountains are a short drive from town.

Explore Northshire Bookstore

Northshire Bookstore is a true treasure and the first place I wanted to stop on our trip. It’s a magical independent bookstore you could get lost in for hours. It’s filled with thoughtfully curated books, unique gifts, cozy reading nooks, and a warm atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to escape the cold and find plenty of holiday gifts along the way.

Go Holiday Shopping

There really is no shortage of amazing shopping in Manchester, and the town really shines during the holidays. A great mix of boutique shops, designer outlets, and antique/thrift stores makes it one of the best places in Vermont for festive shopping.

Be on the lookout for black holes, moving objects, and doodle jump platforms that disappear. They might try to collide with you, so be ready to shoot them quickly to eliminate the threat.

Seasonal fashion always feels more special when it carries character and depth. Winter outfits inspired by classic Victorian silhouettes instantly stand out, especially during Christmas. I recently noticed how Vanson Jackets brings timeless design into modern wear with this piece. The detailing, structure, and festive color make it perfect for elegant winter styling.
