At long last, I’m excited to finally share a look at our master bedroom. In case you missed it, I shared a bit about the beginnings here, and a lot has changed since then. First let me say that we’ve slept on our new mattress for about a month and I can honestly and truly say we both really love it. We went with a soft King (I talk more about the new mattress line from Cocoon by Sealy here). We decided to move our master bedroom upstairs, and made the other room on the second floor into our guest bedroom (eventually I’ll finish that and share it too). To me, the bedroom is the most important room in our house. It should feel like a sanctuary, somewhere you want to go at night to lay your head and somewhere that makes you feel good about waking up in the morning. As someone who’s had a lot of different bedrooms over the last 10 years, Craig and I have moved 8 times since we first moved in together, I can definitely say this is absolutely, positively the best one yet.
Everyone has different preferences for what makes their space special. For me, the perfect bedroom has a few different things. One of my favorite features of our new bedroom is all of the natural light. We are both morning people, Craig wakes up at 5:30 and I wake up around 6:30, so having skylights is such a nice way to start the morning (although lately it’s been almost too bright, might need to tone it down with some shades). I’m sharing more about my morning routine next Monday with The Newsette– you can subscribe at thenewsette.com.
Over the years we’ve collected a few different pieces, some that have been with us through multiple moves (and states) so we both wanted to incorporate them into our bedroom. We got the dresser above at an estate sale a few years ago and we (Craig) painted it a minty green (remember when chalk paint was really big- yeah we got super into it). Also for plants, if you’re like me and have a black thumb, lavender is really easy to keep alive, looks pretty and smells nice.
We each picked one of our favorite photos from trips we’ve taken and framed them with Framebridge (be careful addiction can ensue). I framed a ton of our photos recently for my office to create a gallery wall that I’ll be sharing soon as well. I like having reminders of the places we’ve traveled.
You may notice the absence of a television in our room. That was a conscience decision we made when we moved. Don’t get me wrong I love Netflix, but I have to say there is something really nice about not having a T.V. in our bedroom. I think we both sleep better because of it. I had a few moments of weakness where I almost caved, those chilly, rainy New England days can get the best of you, but I love our living room too so we just cozy up there on the couch.
For the first time ever I have my own vanity. It’s small and simple but it’s so nice to have a place to sit and finish putting on my makeup or do my hair that isn’t the bathroom. I found the gold mirror at Target which I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with but on my most recent trip there it was mostly love.
Since a lot of my job is focused around creating outfits and then photographing them I wanted to have some space to put my clothes out in the open so I can see them. When they’re all tucked away it’s harder for me to plan outfits and visualize my options. Craig built these shelves for me to organize my shoes, sweaters, denim and bags (really simple using shelves, wall brackets and mounts from Home Depot). And since they’re out in the open it forces me to actually put things away instead of throwing them all over the floor and bed.
I got these really cute baskets from Target to hold all of my summer sandals and flip flops. Given that we only have 3 months of summer I realize that I have a lot of sandals, but it’s kind of like bathing suits, one can never have too many right?
And last but not least, the easiest way to make my bedroom my happy place is cuddling up with Nora and Hunter. Hunter was being camera shy, Nora was hamming it up of course, but I love waking up in the morning with those two. Occasionally I wake up to Hunter meowing trying to get Nora and I out of bed, but most mornings he’s lying next to my head purring and Nora is at my feet. It’s funny because people are REALLY opinionated about having pets in the bed. I am of the opinion that its the best thing ever, but I’ve definitely had multiple people say how disgusting and gross it is. To each their own, but it was so nice to read all of your Instagram comments from my post the other day about how many of you love your bedroom because you can snuggle with your pets, I couldn’t agree more. Today is the last day to enter my giveaway on Instagram so if you want the chance to win a new mattress head over there by the end of the day today!
