We’ve all heard of Hygge by now but what does it mean? And don’t even think about asking me to pronounce it. Hygge is a Danish word used to describe moments that embody charm, coziness and contentment. We do live in the Cozy Ranch after all, and one of the main goals in renovating and decorating our house was to create those feelings and moments in every corner of it. It’s easier than you think, so here are some ways to bring hygge into your space too.
Bringing Hygge Into Your Home
Sheepskin rugs
Comfortable textures play a big role in the hygge-at-home atmosphere and are easy to incorporate into a variety of interior design styles. Sheepskin rugs are super versatile (seriously we have them everywhere, exhibit a, b and c). Put them on your kitchen barstools, lay one on your bed, use as a rug by your vanity or drape on a bench or kitchen chairs.
Candles
Candles are instant providers of coziness by providing both warmth and light into a space. Minimal effort for maximum effect! I like to light a few throughout the house, while keeping lights dim, to infuse warmth in every corner.
Cozy Blankets & Pillows
It’s no surprise that everyone in this house loves this this faux fur throw blanket. Toss throw blankets across your sofa, at the end of your bed or an arm chair. You can also put a couple in a basket for a cozy decor element. If you need some throw blanket inspo check out this post. Books
Books remind us that the activities that ‘slow us down’ are just as important as the ones that keep us busy. What better way to unwind than to take some time to flip through a beautiful book. I love this one about crystals I recently picked up and this one on living with plants. They look great as decor and serve as a source of hygge-inspired entertainment for you or your guests. They don’t have to be restrained to a bookshelf either. Stack them on a bench, coffee table or an empty corner that needs an interesting decor element.
Plants
Not only do plants bring the outside in, but they have purifying qualities that better the air and freshness of an indoor space. I love succulents and snake plants (or sansevierias) because they work in a variety of spaces and are very low maintenance.
