Never been more ready for a Friday after this week. The blog was a little quieter than usual as I had to have an emergency dental procedure but we’ll be back to normal next week. Going to finish up work and hopefully do some antiquing this afternoon. I’m planning to (finally) share our living room reveal next week so I’m on the hunt for a few more things before then. Reading about that career break feature on LinkedIn made me cry. I lost my parents in quick succession and shortly after, decided to leave my role as a high school teacher and pivot into a new field. It took me a long time to find a new job, in part because I needed to be really depressed for a while. The longer I was away from work, the harder it seemed to find it, mostly because employers don’t always ask about those career breaks–they just see it as a resume weakness and hire someone else. And it hurt too much for me to bring it up on my own. Having the option to note “bereavement” on my profile could have made a world of difference.

Leigh I am so sorry for your profound loss. Sending you all my love and I hope changes like this become the norm so no one has to experience the kind of hardship you’ve faced re-entering the workforce on top of the grief you’re experiencing.

2. In reference to the comment above me…I had the exact same experience as you in many ways. My father didn’t die during the pandemic…he died before but I was in a ton of grief. Then my mother has been ill and was diagnosed with MS. I also was a high school teacher and have been trying to transition during the pandemic and it has been a horror of sorts. I am so, so sorry for what you are going through and your profound loss. Sending you all my best.

Thank you Dana. I’m so sorry for your loss and what you’ve gone through with your parents. I know so many teachers trying to transition out of education, which makes me sad, but I also completely understand. Thank you for staying with us despite the fact that you yourself are now starting to prepare for treatment. Personally, for me, dental treatment is terrible, because I can hardly stand toothache. My salvation is procedures under general anesthesia and then it becomes a wonderful experience. And I also go to my dentist every 3 months to avoid problems with my teeth. It is better to protect yourself from further pain in this way.
