I have to admit the thought of designing a nursery was a daunting task. When I found out I was pregnant I was so sick for the following 2.5-3 months I couldn’t do anything at all let alone think about designing a room. I also had no idea where to start. I’ve toyed with the idea of using online design services before and actually discovered Modsy through Instagram, so when they reached out to see if there was a room I needed help with, I knew this was the perfect opportunity. It has been such a great experience, so much so that I already bought a package to use for other rooms in the house (including the master bedroom addition-more to come on that). Modsy also gave me a special discount code for you guys as well, use JESSKIRBY20 for 20% off any design package (except luxe) valid through 3/31/20.
I started by taking photos of the room (my old office) and uploading them to my Modsy profile along with measurements of the space. I filled out a Modsy design quiz that helped give the designer an idea of my style. I was a little worried it might box me into one specific genre, so it was a pleasant surprise when the results described my style as modern and minimal, rustic and warm, and nordic/boho, because our house has a little bit of each.
The designer came back with two initial designs which you can see below (they were also able to show how the walls would look in the paint color we chose, Wimborne White). Craig and I both immediately gravitated towards Design #2, but there were elements of Design #1 we really liked, so through some revisions and feedback with our designer we landed on our final design, and I couldn’t possibly love it anymore. It was also pretty awesome how I was able to communicate that I wanted to focus on (where possible) sustainable/non-toxic/eco-friendly decor options, and the designer really took note of that.
Modsy Design One
Modsy Design Two
As you can see from the final design, we took elements from the first two, both layout and decor, to come up with something that felt just right for the space. What’s cool about Modsy is there’s a lot of different ways to use it. For the nursery we were starting from scratch, with the exception of the CB2 shelving I had in my office and wanted to use. You can have your designer create a layout using pieces you already have, you can start fresh or you can land somewhere in the middle (and you can provide a budget for decor so they find pieces within that range). There’s also tools that allow you to swap out furniture on your own, so you can see how something else might look in the space (I could have spent wayyyyy too much time doing this, it’s addictive).

You may have noticed the room doesn’t have a ton of decor going on right now, and that was intentional. I didn’t want to fill the space with things just for the sake of making it look “done.” Our goal was to get the main pieces and layout in place and take our time with the rest. I do love the decor elements Modsy added and will definitely use them for inspiration.
It probably sounds corny, but I want to get to know our baby before I put a bunch of toys, artwork and decor in his or her room. I’m sure there will also be special gifts from friends and family so for now I’m happy to have the space as it is. Aside from round the clock kicks (seriously this kid is Craig’s child-it never stops) putting this room together has made us very excited to meet this baby.
