The Best Sustainable and Ethical Winter Coats

The Best Sustainable and Ethical Winter Coats

Well tomorrow is a high of 39 and a low of 25 so it is officially winter coat weather. Not to brag but I might call myself a bit of a winter coat connoisseur, similar to my experience with winter boots, I’ve had my fair share of winter coats and have amassed a collection of favorites. When it’s really cold for more than half the year, a coat basically becomes your outfit or at least the most important part of your outfit, the majority of the time.

Maybe it was just the time of year I was looking but it seems like options for sustainable and ethical winter coats have come a long way in a short amount of time. There are so many great styles made with recycled materials and ethical manufacturing (and they’re warm too). Here’s a round-up of the best sustainable and ethical winter coats to keep you cozy all season long.

Sustainable and Ethical Wool Coats

A classic wool coat instantly elevates an outfit, whether it’s a belted pea coat, oversized drapey coat, fitted long coat or mid length pea coat. I’m partial to beige and camel tones because they work best with my wardrobe. But I also love a dark charcoal or subtle earth tone plaid. The coat I styled above is a wool/cashmere blend that I got last season and it’s still a favorite. More of my favorites are below.

Ethical and Sustainable Faux Fur Coats

I love, love, love faux fur coats. They are my absolute fave for a stylish winter coat option that’s also warm and cozy. While it’s not sustainably made, I did include the STAND coat I got two years ago because I live in it and the quality is great so I know I’ll have it for years to come. While it’s an oversized fit, it doesn’t look big and bulky but it’s roomy for layers. I love this style from Sezane made from wool and bamboo (it comes in ivory too).

Sustainable Puffer Coats and Parkas

There’s no surviving winter in New England without a good puffer coat and/or parka. As I mentioned in my winter capsule wardrobe I got the Patagonia Down With It Parka last year and it’s SO cozy and warm. For this year I have the Eileen Fisher Recycled Nylon Puffer (extra 30% off with code FRIEND) because it’s extra roomy and will fit my growing belly through the winter, since I’m not due until February I’ve got a ways to go and will need something for the coldest months. For a non-puffy coat, I also got the Everlane Parka for this season which is roomy and super toasty.

Patagonia is the OG of sustainable! I got my first fleece from them made from recycled products when I was a kid, 30 years ago! I’m from SF where there has always been a store and my family was super into outdoor sports so I’ve had a lot of Patagonia over the years. They have always been committed to the environment and to ethical and sustainable practices.

I was super interested to see what you posted about faux fur. While I have no intention of buying real fur, I have a serious issue with faux fur. It is often made from petroleum based products, sheds a lot of micro beads, and takes decades to break down once disposed of. I won’t buy it. I appreciate your recs for some recycled or more sustainable options.
