USVI ST THOMAS PHOTO DIARY

What a magical few days it was. Last weekend I took off from Boston and headed south, to America’s Carribbean, the US Virgin Islands. Not quite sure what to expect but excited for a little adventure I was anxious to explore St Thomas. Looking at a map, I was surprised how far it seemed, much past Harbour Island and very close to Anguilla. But it’s actually quite easy to get to with direct flights from most major cities, and there’s no boat rides, small planes and (for US citizens) no passport required. St Thomas is also very close and easily accessible from St John (USVI) and the British Virgin Islands.

I arrived at the Frenchman’s Reef & Morningstar Star Marriott Beach Resort in the afternoon and was quickly greeted with drinks at the Rum Bar. No better way to kick of a trip than with a margarita and a stunning view. For dinner we dined at the Sunset Grill which sits overlooking the resort’s infinity pool looking out on the ocean. Al fresco dining with an ocean view and a warm salty breeze was the best way to start the trip. With dinner (I ordered the snapper and it was delicious) I had the island’s signature drink, a painkiller, a must try when visiting St Thomas. A mix of coconut cream, orange juice, pineapple juice and rum, they go down way to easy!

The first morning I took a walk down to Morningstar beach, which according to the resort is 96 steps away. But you’ll hardly notice because the views are so breathtaking along the way.

As you head down you’ll probably be greeted by these guys. Full disclosure I was totally freaked out by the iguanas in the beginning, but I think we came to a mutual understanding by the end of the trip. They are actually kind of cute and quite friendly. This one was totally posing for his photo.

The water was dreamy, I swam every chance I could get. Early mornings were my favorite, I had the beach to myself. Morningstar beach was big enough that it never really got crowded, it’s also private so only accessible to resort guests. There’s lounge chairs  all the way down the beach so you can have your pick of the perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun.

There’s nothing like that crystal clear, turquoise blue Caribbean water. Every swim was perfectly refreshing.

Coco Joe’s is a cute little restaurant right on the beach at the resort. We ate breakfast there on our second morning. Listening to waves crash as you sip coffee and eat fresh fruit, pretty perfect way to start your day.

After a morning swim and breakfast at Coco Joe’s I headed to the Lazule Sea Spa located in the resort, where I had the most amazing massage. The moment you walk in your greeted with the soothing scent of essential oils. After an incredible massage I spent some time relaxing at the private pool accessible to spa guests.

An amazing way to unwind and relax after your spa treatment. In addition to lounge chairs there are cabanas so you can hang out with your girlfriends or if you’re there for a couples getaway it’s a nice romantic way to chill out and sunbathe with the pool on one side and the ocean on the other.

When I wasn’t lounging at the beach or one of the resort’s pools, the Adventure Center had tons of activities to choose from. From a sunset sail on The Cat to night kayaking in the harbor there was no shortage of fun things to do

The following day, after an indulgent breakfast buffet of fresh fruit, waffles, bacon, and additional things I am embarrassed to admit I ate in one sitting, we hopped back on The Cat and headed out for snorkeling at Turtle Cove.

I’ve been snorkeling quite a bit in the last two years, most of which has been in the Caribbean. What’s really cool about Turtle Cove is how comfortable the turtles were with being near people. In past experiences, most turtles quickly swim away when they see you. But these turtles were just hanging out, relaxing at the bottom of the ocean. We also snorkeled over a beautiful coral reef and lots of cute little fish, and no sharks, so that was really the best part.

When we got back from our snorkeling adventure, after a delicious lunch (and a few afternoon cocktails) at Sunset Grill, I spent my last afternoon relaxing at the beach before dinner.

For our last meal we ate at Havana Blue, part of the resort’s sister property. An easy walk along the beach or a short shuttle ride, Havana Blue is an absolute must if you are visiting St Thomas. I always have to try a margarita everywhere I go, and the sea smoke margarita was probably one of the best I’ve ever had in my entire life. Dining by candlelight overlooking the ocean, sipping cocktails and recapping the fun we had over the last few days was the perfect way to end an incredible trip.
